Vitamin and Mineral Supplement (take each day):

Basic Principles:

  • Go slow!!! You just reduced your stomach size to hold about 1 oz (or 2 Tbsp). Over time, the pouch will stretch to hold ½ cup to 1 cup.
  • Your diet after surgery goes through stages. This helps the digestive tract adjust to foods gradually and to limit calories in order to promote weight loss.
  • Dumping syndrome may occur if you eat or drink too much too quickly. Symptoms include nausea, sweating, cramping, diarrhea and rapid pulse. Tell your doctor if vomiting occurs.
  • Drink liquids between meals only. After drinking, wait 1 hour before eating foods. Get up to 6 cups of liquids per day to prevent dehydration. Avoid alcohol for 6 months after surgery.
  • The main emphasis for ?diet? after surgery will be foods high in protein and plenty of fluids. It will be low in fat and sugar. Include fruits and veggies.
  • Make protein the center of your meals.
  • Do not take fiber pills without the advice of your physician.

FIRST WEEK AFTER THE SURGERY

CLEAR LIQUID DIET
Clear liquids are liquids and gelatins that one can see through. Do not drink carbonated beverages or alcohol. After surgery, drink sips of clear liquids diluted with water. Drink 1 oz over 10 minutes. Use sugar-free drinks because they won’t cause dumping syndrome? and are low-calorie.

SECOND THROUGH SIXTH WEEK AFTER SURGERY

PUREE / SOFT DIET
It is important to get enough protein in your diet to help heal wounds after surgery and preserve muscle tissue. Your estimated protein needs are ______ gms per day. During this time, eat small amounts of high-protein foods with puree or very soft consistency, such as scrambled eggs, low fat cottage cheese, blenderized lean meats and mashed potatoes. Try strained baby foods.

SIXTH THROUGH TWELFTH WEEK AFTER SURGERY

REGULAR DIET
Gradually introduce regular-consistency foods like cut up chicken, turkey and fish. Chew foods well!! Make sure you?re still getting enough protein by having lean meats or milk at each meal. You must continue to have food and liquids separately. Here are examples:

  • Macaroni and cheese (low fat)
  • Baked potato
  • Whole grain breads / whole wheat pasta
  • Tuna salad with low-fat mayo
  • Scrambled eggs / omelet / Egg substitutes
  • Vegetables and salads
  • Baked or broiled fish, chicken, turkey (white meat)
